Ready to revamp your home? Don’t have the funds to make any major changes? Painting your garage door is an inexpensive way to drastically change the look of your home on the outside. Whether you want to just touch up some old chips and scratches or completely switch paint colors, follow the 4 Ps of painting your home’s garage door.

The Four Ps of New Garage Paint

Prepare

Things you’ll need:

  • All-purpose cleaner

  • Old cloth

  • Garden hose

  • Sandpaper

  • A nice day

Before doing anything, ensure that it’s a nice day (not too hot or too cold), and check the forecast for rain. Nothing will create more problems than a torrential downpour right after applying a fresh coat of paint.

Clean the garage door using the all-purpose cleaner, rag and hose to remove any dirt and grime. Use the sandpaper to scrape off any chipped paint to ensure your paint job will have a smooth finish.

Prime

Things you’ll need:

  • Paintbrush or roller

  • Dust mask

  • Tape
  • Drop cloth
  • Primer

Make sure you’re doing everything you can to avoid excessive messes. Put down a drop cloth to avoid paint stains on your driveway or garage floor. Use the tape to mark off any spots you don’t want to paint to ensure a clean edge.

Double-check that you’re using the right primer for your garage. Most garage doors are made of metal, but others are made of wood. Apply the primer using a paintbrush or roller, and allow it to try for at least 12 hours.

Paint

Things you’ll need:

  • Paint for outdoor use

  • Paintbrush or roller

Paint the door in the same way you used the primer. Let the first coat dry for 24 hours, and then paint a second coat.

Perfect

Once both coats are dry, you may remove the drop cloth. Pull off the tape at a 45-degree angle to ensure a perfect finish. Thoroughly rinse your paintbrush and/or roller so you can use them next time. If any paint dripped on the garage door windows, remove it carefully using a razor blade.

Putting a fresh coat of paint on your garage door is an inexpensive way improve the overall appearance of your home.
